When Should You Book Newborn Photos? A Guide for Expecting Parents
Those first few weeks with a new baby are filled with so many little moments you’ll wish you could bottle up forever. The tiny fingers, the sleepy stretches, the way they curl up against you, and just how impossibly small they are. It all changes so quickly!
Newborn photography gives you a way to hold onto a little piece of that season long after your baby has grown out of those newborn clothes.
If you’re expecting and wondering when to book newborn photos, you’re in the right place! At Marshall + Grey Studios, I help families throughout Lenoir and Western North Carolina preserve these fleeting first moments with timeless newborn portraits.
When Is the Best Time to Book Newborn Photos?
The best time to reserve your newborn photography session is during your second trimester.
I know, I know. When you’re still preparing for baby’s arrival, newborn pictures might feel like one more thing on an already very long to-do list! But booking ahead means you can check this off your list before life gets a little busier.
Newborn photography often involves limited monthly availability, so reserving your spot early helps ensure we can plan your session around your baby’s arrival.
And don’t worry — you don’t need to know your exact session date yet!
When you book with Marshall + Grey Studios, we use your due date to reserve a place on the calendar. Once your little one arrives, we’ll connect and choose the actual session date together. One less thing for you to figure out while you’re adjusting to life with a newborn.
When Should Newborn Photos Actually Be Taken?
I typically plan newborn sessions within the first 7-28 days after birth, depending on your baby’s arrival and our scheduling. This early newborn stage is a beautiful time to capture all those tiny details and fresh-new-baby features. Every baby is different, though, and there is no single perfect age for newborn photographs.
Some babies are sleepier, some prefer to be awake and curious, and some simply have their own ideas about how the day should go. (They may be tiny, but they are already in charge!)
The most important thing is creating a relaxed experience that allows us to photograph your baby gently and safely, without rushing through those precious moments. If your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, we’ll work together to determine the best session date based on availability and your family’s needs.
What If I Haven’t Booked Yet?
First, take a breath! If you’re reading this after your second trimester, it doesn’t hurt to reach out and ask about availability. I take on a limited number of newborn sessions, so availability can vary depending on your due date. Even if you’re further along in your pregnancy, I’d love for you to get in touch so we can see what might be possible. You don’t have to have every detail figured out before reaching out. That’s part of what I’m here for!
What Should I Expect During a Newborn Photography Session?
One of my favorite things about newborn photography is that no two families are exactly alike. Your session should feel like an experience designed for your family, not a rushed appointment where we try to squeeze everything into a tight schedule. At Marshall + Grey Studios, my goal is to create a warm, calm, baby-friendly environment where you can slow down and enjoy this special season. Need to feed your baby? Absolutely.
Need a diaper change, a cuddle, or a few minutes to settle everyone? We can take our time.
Newborn sessions typically last between one and three hours, depending on the session and your baby’s needs. There’s room for those little pauses that come with caring for a brand-new human.
And if you have older children, we can incorporate family and sibling portraits into your experience, too. Those photographs of your children meeting their newest little person are often some of the most meaningful images of all.
Why Choose Professional Newborn Photography?
Of course, you’ll take hundreds of pictures on your phone. You’ll photograph the first smiles, the tiny toes, the funny faces, and probably approximately 47 pictures of your baby sleeping in the same position.
I fully support this. But professional newborn photography gives you something a little different: thoughtfully created portraits that preserve the details, connections, and emotions of this season in a way you can display and enjoy for years.
Whether you envision simple, timeless portraits of your baby or photographs that include the whole family, these images become part of your family’s story.
And one day, when your baby is much bigger and those newborn days feel like a blur, you’ll be so glad you have them.
